Matt Branch’s practice concentrates in the areas of trucking/transportation litigation, construction litigation, insurance coverage, general liability, professional negligence, and premises liability. He has litigated extensively in Georgia state and federal trial courts and has briefed appellate cases before Georgia Court of Appeals and the Georgia Supreme Court. His clients include a variety of companies, individuals, and insurers facing varied complex issues of liability.
Matt graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Political Science, and earned his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center where, as a member of the Law Students in Court Clinic, he represented the interests of indigent clients before DC Courts. Following law school, Matt had the honor of clerking for Chief Judge Hearn of the South Carolina Court of Appeals, one of the busiest appellate courts in the nation, addressing a great breadth of difficult and important cases.
Outside his legal work, Matt is an active tennis player, a sports and music enthusiast, and is engaged in several local social and civic groups and activities. Matt lives in Inman Park/Old Fourth Ward, in the heart of Atlanta.
Matt is active in the defense of a variety of business clients sued under commercial general liability policies for several national insurance carriers. Such clients include trucking companies, builders, banks, hospitals, and distributors of goods and commodities. In addition to providing legal defense from initial incident through settlement or trial, Matt also represents clients with regard to third party claims for and defending against claims for indemnity. Matt’s cases include defense of catastrophic/fatal motor vehicle accident claims, premises liability injuries, product/design defects and malfunctions, robberies and violent crimes on commercial properties, and negligence claims of all kinds. He also counsels his clients regarding potential liability issues arising out of the unique circumstances and legal/regulatory frameworks applicable to the client’s specific industry and endeavor.
As a member of the Construction practice group, Matt has experience litigating commercial and residential construction defect and breach of contract claims, construction accidents, water intrusion, structural land-engineering and grading issues, stucco, settling, and storm water related state law claims. Matt represents owners, general contractors, subcontractors, and subdivision purchasers and developers, in litigation matters relating to high-rise condominium and apartment buildings, techno-industrial developments, pools and parking decks, mixed-use developments, residential subdivisions, high-end custom and “spec” homes, and modest single-family residences.
Matt has experience analyzing coverage under commercial general liability policies, providing insurance companies with coverage opinions relating to claims against their insureds, and drafting reservations of rights letters.
